Joker in rummy is different from the ones you interact with in real life, and certainly very different from the ones you see in some superhero movies. When a person is addressed as a joker in real life, they are assumed to be a person who jokes around or someone who does silly things and is mocked. But a joker in rummy is surely the most useful card one can get because it can act as a replacement for any other card.

In rummy too, there are different types of jokers:

Printed joker

A printed joker is a card that as the name suggests, has the word “joker” printed on it. It can be used to create impure sequences and sets in the game of rummy. As per rummy rules a printed joker carries zero points.

Wildcard joker

A wildcard joker is the one that appears below the closed deck as an open card. All suits of the wildcard joker card can be used as a joker in the game. For example, if 6♥️comes as the wildcard joker then 6♠️6♣️6♦️6♥️will be considered jokers.

A wildcard joker can not only be used to create impure sequences and sets but also pure sequences if the card fits in the sequence naturally.

If the printed joker comes up as the wildcard joker, all aces are considered wildcard jokers.

Jokers in real life and the ones in rummy evoke similar emotions

Whether it’s in real life or rummy, you are always happy to see a joker. They always put a smile on your face. In rummy, you know you can use them anywhere to complete a sequence or set while in real life they are bound to bring some entertainment at that particular moment.

If you look at a Joker card in rummy, it usually has the face of a jester. The role of a jester in medieval times was to entertain the court with jokes and pranks. A jester also used to imitate people and that has carried on in card games as well. Hence, a joker card is a card that can imitate other cards.
