Numerology is a belief that attaches meanings and symbolisms to numbers. It talks about the relationships between numbers, letters, and coinciding events, and is often attached to horoscopes. Numerology as a practice emerged in the Middle Ages and is popular throughout different cultures from across the world.

While it is widely practised, numerology is not an exact science and should thus not be treated as such. Traditionally, numerology focuses on digits 1 to 9, with extra numbers that are considered powerful (11, 22, and 33). When we talk about a deck of playing cards, the possibilities increase significantly since there are also the 4 suits and face cards to account for. In this blog, we will talk about what each card tells about your personality as per the rules of numerology.

Card Numerology: Overview

In many cultures, the four suits of a deck of playing cards relate to different things. In English-speaking countries, the French-suited deck is used, which contains Hearts, Spades, Clubs, and Diamonds that we play with in India today. In other countries, the suits often vary; such as in Latin America, the traditional suits are Swords, Batons, Coins, and Cups. For the scope of this blog, however, we will only be focusing on the French suits.

The 4 French suits are often connected to 4 elements that are said to be the basis of life in alchemy.

Hearts: Fire

Clubs: Water

Diamonds: Earth

Spades: Air

The four suits are often said to relate to the different social classes in the medieval era:

♥️ Hearts relate to clergy and matters of spiritual importance, such as love.

♣️ Clubs are said to represent peasantry and hard work/labour.

♦️ Diamonds connote to the riches of the merchant class.

♠️ Spades are related to weaponry and the warrior class.

Numbers and Their Meanings

Generally, most of western numerology uses the Pythagorean system; this system is focused on digits 1 to 9 and attaches specific personality traits to each of them. An alphanumeric system is also derived from this rule: the consecutive letters of the English alphabet are assigned 1 through 9 and then the cycle repeats itself. So, A is assigned 1, B is 2, and so on till I, which is 9. After this, J becomes 1 again, K becomes 2 and so on.

In a standard deck of cards, numbers go from 2 to 10. Considering ace as 1, we get 1 to 9 of the Pythagorean system plus an additional number 10.

💡Fun Fact: It is assumed through some historical sources that the 10 cards might have actually been another face card, created after the Queen’s attendant. It would make sense since a King’s attendant is said to be the Jack, then there must have been an attendant for the Queen as well.

Now, let’s find out what your favourite card tells about you. We will talk about numbers 1 (ace) through 10 first, and then the face cards.

Number 1: Leader

Person whose lucky/favourite number is 1 tend to be driven, bold, and vivacious. They are natural at taking charge, but this may also cause them to be too stuck up to compromise. So, while 1 can be the greatest, it can also be the loneliest number.

Number 2: Peacekeeper

It takes 2 to tango. Yin and yang, good and bad, up and down; 2 relates to a personality who maintains peace and diplomacy, and balances both sides. While they are the best of friends, they are sometimes over-sacrificing and sensitive.

Number 3: Entertainer

The number 3 personality type is that of the ‘life of a party’. They mostly seek our opportunities to shine, and bring a burst of energy to anything they become a part of. Being out there all the time often causes them to feel a little directionless and moody.

Number 4: Builder

This personality type is extremely hard-working and would want to build something from the ground up. Being methodical and meticulous is in their nature. Their discipline often makes them come across as stubborn and unfriendly.

Number 5: Adventurer

They’re fleeting, always evolving. Number 5 personality types understand that change is the only constant and they seek out atrophy of sorts. Because they seem restless and energetic, sometimes they may be seen as unreliable or untrustworthy.

Number 6: Nurturer

Number 6 personality types in numerology are referred to as ‘parents’. They have an innate sense of caregiving and nurturing, driving them more towards a traditional family lifestyle and values. Sometimes, their self-righteousness could make them meddlesome and excessive affection can make them look overbearing, which is not a well-appreciated quality.

Number 7: Scholar

This personality type is associated with spirited individuals who seek more comfort in gaining knowledge than engaging with other people. They often have an air of mystery around them, mainly stemming from their innate necessity to constantly know more about everything. They are often aloof and may find difficulties in maintaining relationships.

Number 8: Authoritative

8 is the symbol of infinity, which surmises the connection between life and the cosmos. 8 is the representation of both highs and lows. People with this kind of personality tend to actively seek high positions of power for the sake of financial gain. Unlike number 1 personality types, who are driven to lead for the greater good, 8s are more about taking the power. This bullheadedness is often disliked by others.

Number 9: Humanitarian

Number 9 is said to be the strongest in numerology. People with this personality sum up the good traits of many other types, such as their ability to care without becoming overbearing, or that they are natural leaders without seeking it out. While their good qualities are great, they’re often difficult to understand, which in turn makes them even more emotionally distant.

Number 10: Innovator

Number 10 comes after the Pythagorean cycle. It is associated with starting afresh, with a new perspective. This personality type is associated with people who are curious about the new and themselves too. 10 marks new beginnings and independence from the old stuff. Sometimes, starting anew can leave unresolved issues on the backburner leaving others feeling left out.

Face Cards and Their Meanings

Historically, it is assumed that the 4 suits describe the greatest ruling families of their time:

♥️ King of Hearts – King of France, Charlemagne

♣️ King of Clubs – King of Macedonia, Alexander

♦️ King of Diamonds – Roman Caesar, Augustus

♠️ King of Spades – King of Israel, David

Their personalities and ways of reign tell fascinating stories about human psychology. If your favourite is one of these cards, read up about their accomplishments to know how well they fit with your personality type.

In general, Kings are regarded as stoic rulers, calm-looking ferocious men. Queens are associated with femininity and wisdom, such as with goddesses like Athena. Jacks, as they are now called, are noble knights with a deep sense of justice and courage in the face of danger.

Joker is the court jester. He speaks truth to power, and doesn’t shy away from consequences. His quick wit and humour make him untouchable even by those ruling. There is only 1 (or 2, in some decks) Joker card in a deck, which makes it unique and irreplaceable.

How to Read Cards and Suits

Now that we know what various cards mean, you can easily find your personality type using different parameters. Let’s understand with a few examples.

Let’s say you like 5 of Spades (5 ♠️)

You are a wanderer, an adventurer who knows no destination, much like the wind (or ‘air’, for spades). You will never be afraid of doing the right thing, even if you never draw a weapon first.

Let’s say you like 7 of Hearts (7 ♥️)

You are someone seeking knowledge, but with your intelligence, you also understand that you lack passion in your other relationships. You yearn for growth, but at the same time feel a void of love.

What if say, you liked the Queen of Clubs (Q ♣️)

You are a person who is giving, nurturing, and adaptive to any situation you’re in like water. You take many shapes and forms, and do what is demanded of you. But, just like water, you can only be controlled so much. You’re capable of just as much wrath and destruction as you are of love and generation.

Think of your number/face card values as your guiding principles, while the suit governs your natural element. If you’re like water, you are adaptable and supportive (of life). If you’re like fire, you’re deeply passionate but often uncontrollably destructive. If you’re a number 3, you try to always lean towards the fun side of life.

We would like to reiterate that numerology isn’t an exact science. It is more of a belief system, so just because you chose a number doesn’t mean you always have to be what it says about you! We all hold the power you make and break our destinies.
