A set can be formed by grouping 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits. In 13 card rummy, a Joker card can be used to make a valid set of up to 7 cards. Whereas, a sequence can be formed by grouping at least 3 consecutive cards of the same suit. Also, it’s important to have at least one pure sequence to make a valid declaration, but a set is not required for the same.

What is rummy?

The popularity of rummy in India began with the introduction of 13-card rummy. The online format of 13-card rummy is an exciting game that requires a perfect combination of skills and strategies. The most basic rule with which the game starts is by dealing 13 cards to each player at the beginning of the game.

The 13-card rummy variant is played among 2 to 6 players. The main objective of the game is centered around forming sequences and sets to make a valid declaration. To make a valid declaration in the game, the player has to form at least 2 sequences and one of them needs to be a pure sequence. The winner of the deal is the player who makes a valid declaration before other players.

Discard

The act of laying off an unwanted card on each turn is called discarding.

Drop

If a player is not confident on the hand dealt, they can drop out of the game by using the “Drop” option. There is a penalty of 15 points for dropping before a single turn and 30 points for dropping after a turn, which will be added to their overall score.

Declare

On completing the objective of the game, the player discards the last unwanted card in the “Show here” slot and declares the cards.

Wildcard joker

After the cards have been dealt, a random card is chosen as the wildcard Joker. You can see this card at the bottom of the closed deck.

Open deck

It consists of cards that players have discarded on each turn.

After dealing the cards, the remaining cards are placed face down to form a closed deck. Players have the option to draw a card from this deck on their turn during the game.

• High-value/ points cards should also be discarded if required

If you have high-value cards that can’t be included to form sets or sequences, discard them immediately. By doing so, if an opponent declares before you, you will not lose by a higher margin. It’s a very common trick that is adopted by every rummy player. So, if your hand requires a high-value card to form a set or sequence, just be patient and wait for your opponent to discard that high-value card for you.

• Make smart use of jokers

In a game of rummy, getting a joker is a big deal. You can win or lose the game by having or not having a joker, respectively. Whether it’s a printed joker or a wild card joker, use them smartly by forming a set or sequence with high-value cards.

• Hold on to the middle cards of potential sequences

While playing a game of rummy it’s essential to think ahead. You can keep a couple of cards, even if they don’t make a sequence right away. They might turn into a good sequence later, especially if they’re the middle cards.
